Listen up, Vault Hunters! On August 27th, IDW is releasing Borderlands: The Fall of Fyrestone #2. Written by Mikey Neumann with art by Agustin Padilla, Gearbox’s humorous shooter makes its way to the shelves of your comic book store.
Following a mission from the first Borderlands game, Borderlands: The Fall of Fyrestone #2 follows Lilith, Roland, Mordecai, and Brick as they meet TK Baha and agree to kill the giant skag Scar in exchange for information on where to get a vehicle. This is actually one of the early missions from the video game. This issue gives a little depth and tragedy to the very funny TK Baha while revealing more of each of the main characters. Neumann adeptly handles the dynamic of the group and retains the sense of humor that makes the games so successful. It’s particularly fun to watch Roland and Lilith playfully vie for the leadership position.
Agustin Padilla does an excellent job of bringing a lot of the game’s cel-shaded style to the comic while also exhibiting his own style. Esther Sanz’s color work starts with the games originally dusty palette and gradually explodes into brilliant color. This happens as the action peaks and brings a sense of excitement to each panel.
Fans of the Borderlands games will enjoy Borderlands: The Fall of Fyrestone #2I as will non-gamer comics fans. This is a great read that finds a balance between moving stories, action, and humor.
