onslaughtDr. Grordbort: Onslaught is a wickedly funny romp through the steampunk genre. Follow the explorations of Lord Cockswain, browse through the bestiary, shop for a doomsday device or keep up with the mad scientist (and entrepreneur) Dr. Grordbort in this action packed trade paperback. The full title is Dr. Grordbort: Onlaught, Excessive Violence for Boys and Girls, and if you can’t tell the tone of this trade from the title, writer and creator Greg Broadmore will clear it up for you in just the first few pages (generally speaking: clever writing, dirty humor, and a few not so ‘p.c’ references). You will laugh out loud as you read through Onslaught (assuming you find Moon Destroyers and children’s tears to be amusing).

Take, for example, this description of Lord Cockswain, protagonist of the stories scattered throughout the book.

“He has consistently scored top marks in highly controlled, double-blinded clinical tests for ‘very bushy facial hair’, ‘most impressive biceps’, ‘appealing minty odour’ and ‘who’s best at standing heroically with his legs wide apart?’, amongst other important-sounding experiments. A towering bastion of British heroism, Lord Cockswain has traveled space in his Endangerer rocketship, studying, shooting and sometimes romancing its flora and fauna — and he has the scars, scratches and netherly rashes to prove it.”

"The Oik, a dangerous and reclusive ambush predator, does not actually have springs in its neck (as dissections will reveal). That would be stupid"

The “catalog” sections of the trade paper show the imagination and versatility of the artist. It would make an excellent coffee table book, assuming your guests are not of tender years. The colors and art style remain true to the steampunk aesthetic, and fans of the genre will love the visuals. The writing will keep you smirking to outright rolling on the floor. Be warned, readers who will enjoy Dr. Grordbort are possessing of a certain sense of humor. It is not the best choice for the straight-laced or faint of heart.

dicksThis trade paperback is a collections of works from Broadmore, so there is no need to be familiar with the characters or story before hand. Dr. Grordbort has quickly made a name for themselves in the steampunk community, and if you want to take your fandom to the next level, you  will often find Dr. Grordbort at conventions throughout Southern California. Several of the weapons featured in this book can actually be bought at events or on their website here,(reading is more fun with a raygun in your hand). Fans of Dr. Grordbort and the steampunk genre are sure to love this collection. If you are looking for a fun, slightly wicked, but absolutely hilarious read, Dr. Grordbort: Onslaught is for you.
