What brings you to Silent Hill? Those familiar with the Silent Hill video game franchise know that your past brings you in. Being good is not how one receives the invitation of silence and fog. Silent Hill Downpour: Anne’s Story #1 brings forward the supporting character of Anne Marie Cunningham from 2012’s Silent Hill Downpour.
Written by Tom Waltz, known for his work on Silent Hill: Sinner’s Reward, Silent Hill: Past Life and the Silent Hill Downpour video game, Anne’s Story #1 keeps with the original tone of the game. Anne keeps her blunt aggression and quick wit through both our preview of past events and expansion of those we hadn’t seen before. As in the video game series, the dialog is brief but pointed. Waltz draws you in and keeps you wanting, but not unsatisfied. His previous work is the series is very much an asset as he starts a new chapter within Silent Hill Downpour.
Art was provided by Tristan “T-Rex” Jones, with a variant cover by Justin Randall. Being a fan and familiar with the series I recognized the variant cover right away. Unfortunately, I don’t think it has a payoff for new readers. The content doesn’t support the image – yet. I worry that the fan service the image provides might be too much of a spoiler.
Overall, Jones illuminates the importance of light and darkness that the Silent Hill video game series is so reliant on. The light is overwhelming in the panels, but not distracting. The darkness is consuming, but not so much as to muddle the scene. The reds show movement, without feeling heavy. Jones also seems to add another layer to his imagery – as is true with most things, there is often more to what you see.
Jones and Waltz have, together, created an ideal path for both the Silent Hill fan and a first time reader. While created to give more depth to the pre-established character of Anne Marie Cummings from Silent Hill Downpour her story stands alone. Silent Hill Downpour: Anne’s Story #1 is available now from IDW.
