Beauty Buys on the Cheap

As a makeup artist I have a large selection of beauty products that are high-end, high priced. There are a lot of products out there that work almost as good, just as good and some even better than their pricier cousins….and cost a fraction of the price! So before you blow your New Year’s resolution to “spend less money” check out a few of my favorite things!

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist....these are a few of my favorite things!

I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist!

First off you need some decent tools. If I ever come to your house, I will rummage thru your makeup bag and I swear to Sasquatch if I ever find one of these….

eyeshadow sponge

Please no.

….it won’t be pretty. When you get a new shadow the first thing you should do is throw away the sponge applicator. It’s like trying to paint a Picasso with a hairbrush. You could do it, but no one would want to look at it. The one exception to this is when you buy something more expensive and it comes with a snazzy brush.

Naked palette

You can keep this one.

I know, brushes can be expensive but you don’t have to get them all at once. I have a lot of pricey brushes but I also have a few brushes on the lower end. My favorite brushes on the cheaper end of the spectrum are by e.l.f. My favs are their eyeshadow brushes. Specifically, the Studio Eyeshadow “C” Brush and the Essential Eyeshadow Brush. They do a much better job than those craptastic sponge applicators that come in drugstore shadows. But the best part? They range from $1.00 to $3.00. What?!

My latest discovery is NYX Wonder Pencil. From the NYX website: “CONCEAL flaws and blemishes with creamy precision; LINE your lips against lipstick bleeding and fading; and BRIGHTEN your eyes along the water line.” You know what? It’s all true. I mostly use it for concealing those little blemishes and dark spots I’d rather not see the light of day but it also works great for all the reasons they list plus I sometimes use it to highlight my brows (draw on a line right under your brow and blend to really define them). It’s kind of amazing. It goes on smooth and blends like a dream. The only thing I don’t like about these is there are only 3 colors – not too much variety for my sisters darker than the color Deep (I use the medium in the winter in case you were curious). The best part about the Wonder Pencil is the price – $4.50 ya’ll!

Don’t wonder. Get it!

Wet n Wild Lip pencils are pretty awesome. The cult favorite is #666 Brandy Wine and for good reason.

If the Devil wore lipliner, it’d be #666.

I am not the biggest fan of lipliners but I do love using them when I’m applying a darker color. #666 is one of those liners that can be used with reds, browns and anything in between. It’s a versatile shade (sorta red, sorta brown, sorta awesome) that goes on smooth and keeps your lipstick on your beautiful pucker and not smeared all around your mouth like you’ve been making out with Dave Grohl…..wait, what was I saying? Mmmmm Dave Grohl. Oh right. Lipliner. Yes! And it clocks in under 2 bucks. I keep about 4 of these in my kit at all times.

You guys! I LOVE the jumbo eye crayons from NYX.

Remember when it was hot out (dramatic pause so you can think about a time when the wind chill didn’t matter) and you worried about your eyeshadow creasing in the middle of the day? Well these little babies have got you covered. You can use them alone just as a regular eyeshadow but my preference is to use them under a powder shadow as a primer. Not only will they keep your shadow fresh all day but they also give your color a pop. The colors are so gorgeous they will only intensify anything you put over them. You ready for the price my loves? $4.50 a crayon. I know, right? I have ALL the colors. ALL OF THEM!

Wet n Wild is making the list again this time with their lipsticks. I’m totally crushing on their Mega Last Lip Colors. Hard.

I first heard about them from my friend Heather (hey girl!) who was looking for Mac dupes. She told me Wet n Wild Cherry Bomb is a dupe for Mac Diva. This I had to see. The color is pretty close and I la-la-love it! So once I got that one? Hooked! So far I’ve tried Cherry Bomb and Cinammon Spice. They’re both on the darker side. Every now and again I throw on some flannel, black leggings, biker boots and my blood red lips and pretend it’s still the 90s.

Remember this lipstick? I do, cause it’s on my lips.

So that’s all for now my loves. I’ll be back with more of these articles so you can save some moolah while keeping up the gorg!
