Advance Review: Legenderry: Red Sonja #1

LegenderryRS01CovFRareBenitThere is an alternate universe created Bill Willingham (Fables) that has reimagined comic book characters in a steampunk universe.

Awww, hell yeah, this has my name written all over it.

It all begins with Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure featuring Green Hornet and Vampirella.  Willingham as created a series of steam-pulp. I missed out on the these issues but boy did I jump at a chance to read this one with Red Sonja. There has only been two instances where I have been introduced to Red Sonja: Gail Simone’s comic writing and She Writes Comics documentary. Red Sonja’s character has been steadily growing on me. Not only is she this brave, strong, independent warrior, she rocks it in a chain-maille bikini and swirling red hair. A fiery battle goddess who will not hesitate to gut you.

Willingham funneled the essence of Red Sonja in the Legenderry series by making her into a pirate captain overseeing her own boat of pretty good looking men. She even admits that there is nothing wrong with that. That is only about a page into the comic and I am head over heels in awe of her. After a long voyage, she has returned to the big city to rest. Except that fate won’t let her as she becomes embroiled with some mysterious group hell bent on capturing an older gentlemen. There is a fight, there is a chase, and surprise appearance from a Victorian horror classic literature.

First issue and I am delightedly happy. Willinghams Red Sonja in a steampunk world is fantastic. The bikini top is kept but she is rocking some skin tight pants. Her attitude seems less constrained than Gail Simone’s run. Instead her flippant attitude and simple kindness is on par with a pirate queen in this world.

This is a steam pulp series I can get behind. Definitely excited for the next issue.

Legenderry: Red Sonja #1 can be picked up from her local comic book retailer from Dynamite comics on or after February 11, 2015.
