This Spring Music Documentaries Are Looking for the Groove

Two music documentaries are coming out about the life and times of those who made music just a little more groovy.

The first is called The Wrecking Crew. This film, directed by Denny Tedesco, is a work of family love about his father Tony Tedesco and his work with a casual gathering of musicians in Los Angeles knows as The Wrecking Crew.

Here’s the Synopsis:

What the Funk Brothers did for Motown…The Wrecking Crew did, only bigger, for the West Coast Sound. Six years in a row in the 1960’s and early 1970’s, the Grammy for “Record of the Year” went to Wrecking Crew recordings. And now,THE WRECKING CREW tells the story in pictures and that oh, so glorious sound. The favorite songs of a generation are all here, presented by the people who made them for you. THE WRECKING CREW is a documentary film produced and directed by Denny Tedesco, son of legendary late Wrecking Crew guitarist Tommy Tedesco. The film tells the story of the unsung musicians that provided the backbeat, the bottom and the swinging melody that drove many of the number one hits of the 1960’s. It didn’t matter if it was Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, The Monkees, The Byrds or The Beach Boys, these dedicated musicians brought the flair and musicianship that made the American “west coast sound” a dominant cultural force around the world. The film is a fun and moving tribute from Denny to his father and to the music, the times and to the secret star-making machine known only as “The Wrecking Crew”.

Having seen the film, I will tell you it is a great work of love and highly informative about famous musicians. It’s also positive about women in the field, spending a good chunk of time on the work of an incredible female bassist.

The Wrecking Crew comes to theaters and VOD on March 13, 2015.

The second one is a little bit weirder. Sir Doug and the Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove is…well, let’s let the trailer cover this one:

Here’s the Synopsis:

Sir Doug & The Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove tells the story of Doug Sahm, the wild man musicians’ musician and unsung hero of Texas music. A country music child prodigy and teenage rhythm & blues dynamo who caused a riot at his San Antonio high school, Sahm emerged as an international rock star leading the Sir Douglas Quintet. He landed in San Francisco just in time for the Summer of Love in 1967. He returned to Texas as the cowboy hippie rocker who built a burgeoning music scene in Austin in before forming the Tex-Mex super group The Texas Tornados. A kinetic, quirky character with a solid sense of place as well as an innate wanderlust, Doug Sahm’s story is the story of Texas music.
