Talk about wrapping up an incredible plot line! As discussed in Issue 9 of Rat Queens, a diabolical overlord by the name of Gerrig (an occultist who blames the sadness in his life on Hannah’s “beau” Sawyer) has summoned demons the the world that feast on the emotional trauma life suffers under the influence of time distortion. So far the Rat Queens are doing their best to reject the influence of these immense creatures (that seriously resemble Mindflayers from D&D or smaller versions of what I imagine Cthulu would look like). The reader is often shoved into Hannah’s past experiences then ripped forward in time to the present as the influence increases (y’know, cuz town’s people keep dying so the power waxes and wanes like waves against the Rat Queens). During the mental struggles Sawyer attempts to reason with Gerrig. His words fall on deaf ears and Sawyer resolves to face the worst as one of the demons Gerrig has summoned comes to collect its new master.
Meanwhile, the crew has found their way to the fort where Gerrig has walled he and Sawyer in. Despite her better judgment, Hannah blasts the door blocking their path with an immense surge of magical energy. This spell weakens her will and casts her back into a memory. Dee attempts to wake Hannah but is warned by her “Husband” that time is running out. So, with her fears shoved behind her the new High Priestess of N’rygoth (aka Dee) faces the monstrous demons Gerrig summoned and sends them back from whence they came while also ending the life of their summoner.
As the skies clear and peace is once again restored the town’s people (the few that survived) cannot help but wonder what the future has in store for them. Indeed, it is a question the reader may find themselves asking as well. Will Hannah, Dee, Violet and Betty find love and and relaxation in their future? Or is the mysterious call Hannah gets from her “magic cell phone” an ill omen? AS usual, great conversation, action and character development keeps you entranced by the beauty that is the Rat Queens series. I look forward to future issues and urge new readers to pick up a copy (or two…or ten, lol) of this comic. It’s a great addition to any strong comic book collection!
