My Little Pony: Friends Forever #16 features some of the younger citizens of Ponyville. The Cutie Mark Crusaders: Sweetie Bell, Apple Bloom and Scootaloo, are in a race to solve a scavenger hunt against Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon, also known as Team Sugar Lump Bump. Team Sugar Lump Bump seems to have the upper hand when Diamond Tiara hires detective Prancy Drew. With some quick thinking and luck the Cutie Mark Crusaders prove that friendship is more important than winning.
This story has a “Tortoise and the Hare” feel to it. The Crusaders use team work to get to their destination while Diamond Tiara buys her way to the finish line. While the Crusaders have some mishaps they get lucky and end up exactly where they need to be. Stories like this help demonstrate to younger readers that one cannot buy their way to happiness. I have always been fond of stories featuring the Crusaders because it is much easier for the younger fans to connect with since the Crusaders are always trying to find their place in Ponyville.
As with many My Little Pony issues there are some fun hidden gags in the panels. My personal favorite was a nod to Loony Tunes. It was also fun to see a character named Prancy Drew, a play on the popular mystery series character Nancy Drew.
Check this issue out for a fun adventure with the Cutie Mark Crusaders.
