Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency #1

DirkGently01_cvrBack in ancient days, two Egyptians worry their buddy is going to change now that he’s been promoted to Pharoh. Fast forward to modern day. Dirk Gently, Holistic Detective, is mid case but without an agency or home. Emerging from the luggage storage of a plane, he has stolen a Duffel bag from the compartment. The owner of the bag catches him as he is hopping in a cab and follows quickly with his girl who just so happens to be trying to mimic every famous serial killer in history. Dirk loses them and heads to a tea shop that is detective themed and goes to open the bag. He meets the shop proprietors and discusses the true meaning of being a detective.   Meanwhile in San Diego, the local museum is being taken over by mummies who are literally sucking the life out of attendees. Our serial killer friend kills a homeless man in an alley and makes plans to meet back up with her accomplice. A friend of the murdered man runs into the tea shop to explain what happened. Dirk finally opens the bag, and is shocked by what he finds.

Dirk is dressed strangely like David Tennant on Doctor Who and has a similar physical appearance. His character is the bubbly erratic nature of the modern Doctor, his mind far more in tune than that of Sherlock Holmes. Fans of either will likely find themselves fascinated by this story.  Dirk Gently was the invention of the late great Douglas Adams. Adams was better know for his book series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and his work as a writer on classic Doctor Who, but Dirk Gently was his all the same. In honor, IDW is releasing this book the week of Towel Day (a celebration of Douglas Adams) so that fans may celebrate by reading the work.

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency #1 is a colorful and bright book with a fun and just so slightly twisted storyline. I can’t wait to read more in the series.

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency #1 is available from IDW May 20, 2015.
