The Time Travel with Outlander event at Barnes & Noble’s Get Pop Cultured Time-Travel day at Barnes & Noble featured a small group of women enjoying their fandom. Stories were exchanged, favorite moments discussed, and everyone posed with the life-sized cutout of Jamie. People who came to Outlander through the book and those who are just starting to read the series because of the show came together to enjoy their fandom.
Fans of the book talked about their favorite aspects of the- book—the historical detail and the relationship between Jamie and Claire came up as favorite reasons. Though some of the new fans admitted to finding that the detail in the books was occasionally overwhelming, they were encouraged to continue reading because the series was worth it.
The event officially began with a quiz. Most questions were answered quickly and cheerfully–these people are fans, and fans know their stuff. By the end, everyone—the quiz-giver included—was gathered around the paper discussing the pronunciation and meaning of the Gaelic words, among them Sassenach (“Outlander”) and Mo nighean donn (“brown haired lass”). The raffle at the end included prizes such as a poster from Outlander, the first season of the show on DVD, and The Outlandish Companion
After the raffle, several of the women stayed and chatted. Most had not met before, but as fans, they were enjoying sharing their fandom, talking of their favorite books, the show and its costumes, signings Diana Gabaldon with and contact with the actors, and plans to go to the San Diego Comic-Con. Eventually, they dispersed, carrying their prizes, a copy of Claire’s horoscope, an Outlander timeline, and copies Diana Gabaldon’s curry recipe.
Although the event I went to, I hear that the Outlander.SoCa.Edition got together and headed to another Barnes & Noble in the area.
What about you? Did you go to the Outlander event, or have you plans to attend any of the other Pop-Cultured events?
