Awesome Asian Bad Guys- LA Premiere

FangirlNation was invited to attend the Los Angeles premiere of Awesome Asian Bad Guys hosted by the National Film Society with collaborations from Visual Communications. As fans of these associations, this reviewer was pretty excited.

National Film Society is a web series spearheaded by two Asian-American film makers: Stephen Dypiango and Patrick Epino. These two collaborate on videos centering around filming experiences and general fun. Each brings their own awkward, quirky fun energy in their video.

About three years ago, the pair came up with the idea of highlighting the awesome Asian bad guys of cinema. In their video, they highlight some of their favorites and wanted to make this into a web series. With tremendous support, the idea for the webshow has spawned a full length movie.

They were able to produce their own quirky comedy action movie simple dubbed Awesome Asian Bad Guys. The movie starts off in the meta field with the two guys filming their YouTube show about Asian bad guys. They are soon interrupted by Tamalyn Tomita (Karate Kid II) who seeks their help in assembling the best Asian bad guys to take down the ultimate bad guy that murdered her twin sister. They are able to assemble Yuji Okumoto (Karate Kid II), Sapphire Steel as Jet Li, George Cheung (Big Trouble Little China), Randall Park (Fresh Off the Boat, The Interview) and Al Leong (Big Trouble Little Trouble). As they work through their squabbles and inadequacies, they all face the bug bad honcho, Aaron Takahashi ( Yes Man, The Wedding Ringer) with his side Dante Basco (Hook, Avatar: the Last Airbender).

The movie brought together so many wonderful actors and actresses that worked and complemented one another well. The whole movie was silly and full of references that made me tear up from laughing. It was pure, absolute ridiculous fun. My cheeks were hurting from laughing so much. When the lights went up, I was surprised that I had only two seats away from Al Leong! I could tell he was pleased by the audiences positive reaction to the movie.

The warmth and camaraderie between the cast members could be felt on stage. There were so many jokes and more laughter. There was mention of a sequel possibly titled Awesome Asian Bad Girls. Here’s to hoping for some more fun!

You can catch Awesome Asian Bad Guys here.
