Syfy will air a six-part miniseries based on Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End. The miniseries premieres December Monday, December 14th and Wednesday, December 16th at 8PM.
Childhood’s End follows the peaceful invasion of Earth by the alien Overlords, who promise to eliminate poverty, war and sickness – ushering in a golden age of peace, health and security for all of humankind. But why do the Overlords insist on hiding their appearance – and what do they ultimately want from Earth? While much of the world enjoys its newfound utopia, some suspect there’s a price to pay. As the truth about the Overlords’ intentions are revealed, humanity will discover its actual destiny may actually be a nightmare, instead of a dream.
The novel is adapted by Mathew Graham (Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes) who is also the executive producer. Alissa Phillips (Moneyball,Mob City) is co-executive producer. Nick Hurran (Sherlock, Doctor Who) is director.
We now have the necessary CGI to make aliens and an advanced Earth look convincing, and recent events have proven that it is, indeed, possible to produce a good miniseries from a well-loved book. Here’s hoping Childhood’s End will be among the successes. It is a pity, though, that people in this utopia wear much the same clothes everyone wears now. TV is definitely in need of some creative costume design. Watch the trailer here
