CODENAMES: A MUST FOR EVERYONE!

pic2673474_md“I think Saturn is a red planet.” My lips uttered the words and as I pointed to the card, my heart sank. Not only did my team look at me like I was crazy, (Saturn is not a red planet) but I had picked a card for the other team. While I’ll never live down Saturn and “The red planet”, Codenames is sitting pretty as my favorite game at the moment. (Sorry Loonacy!)

Codenames is an amazing party game designed by Vlaada Chvatil.  The game is best with 2-8 players and runs about 15 minutes. This game is simple with easy set up. Break players into two teams and randomly set up the cards so everyone can see. Choose one person from each team to be the Spymasters (who give one word clues) and then pick one of the puzzle keys.

pic2660376_mdOne of the best things about this game is the endless possibilities for the puzzle keys. Basically your team captains will try to get you to guess all the cards for your team color (red or blue). You have to be careful though because if you pick wrong you can either give the opposite team a point, find a civilian and end your turn, or end the game by finding the Assassin. The puzzle keys tell the Spymasters which cards they need to get you to guess. However, the amazing thing is that you can rotate the card any way for four different playing options on one card.

pic2660378_mdSo once you have everything set up, the Spymasters will look at their cards and try to get you to guess as many cards as possible using only one clue. THIS IS A LOT HARDER THEN IT SEEMS! So let’s say you need your team to guess words Sink, Water, Spot, and Chick. If you could, you would try to find a clue to link all of them. Be careful though because you might think your being really clever and it might totally go over your teams head! Or your team might really over think an extremely simple clue. THIS IS WHY ITS SO MUCH FUN! Who doesn’t love poking fun at our stupidity at times?

Once you play this game, you can’t stop. I think we ended up playing around six different rounds before we decided to change it up. I don’t know many games you would play for six different rounds and have as much or even more fun than the first round. Codenames is perfect for all ages and all game lovers. Even just writing this review, I am itching to play it again. Always check out your local game stores first but if they don’t have it, Codenames can be found on Amazon.
