23-get-jiro-blood-and-sushi-cover.nocrop.w529.h848.2xWhat happens when you give Anthony Bourdain comic writing authority on the story of sushi master Jiro? Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi is a tale of gang warfare, fresh fish and what happens when you try to keep your criminal life and your cooking life separate. Jiro is the son of a Yakuza gang leader. His brother is more interested in murder and becoming the leader of the gang. Jiro would rather perfect being sushi chef with the older master he mentors with. After the killing of a rival gang leader, Jiro’s family begins to take bribes from local businesses, one of which belongs to Jiro’s master. It takes a personal loss to bring the whole thing crashing down, and leads Jiro to have to decide what matters most.

When I picked up Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi I honestly had no idea what to expect. Anthony Bourdain has found his way into popular culture with appearances on Archer and now comic books. The comic was much more violent than I was expecting, but fascinating. While Jiro is learning the balance of making perfect sushi rice, his brother is plotting ways to take down major components of crime families. While Jiro knows how to slice fish, his brother is slicing throats.

Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi is now available from Vertigo.
