In case you haven’t heard, Robert Downey Jr. is out as Iron Man. Depending on what you want to believe, he either grew tired of the role, thought he was getting too old, wanted more money, or some sort of combination of all three. Whatever the case, chances are you may be bummed about it, especially given how well cast he was for the superhero/bad-boy role.
While Downey Jr. will be missed, this of course does not mean the end of Iron Man in film. Nor does it mean that you have to necessarily cast him aside as the man also known as Tony Stark. If you’re (somehow!) already feeling nostalgic for Downey Jr.’s brilliant take on Stark/Iron Man, there are some ways to fulfill that notion.
For one, you can pop in a DVD/Blu-ray of his existing films, or you can find him in quite a few different video games. While you may not think of Iron Man having too many games, you’d actually be quite wrong. In fact, there are four casual games featuring Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, along with other characters from the films (and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, for that matter). The games also serve as a nice holdover for the forthcoming LEGO Marvel’s Avengers, which is looking pretty damn fun.
But in any case, who should be the next actor to slip on the metal suit? Here are some possible candidates.
As Depp has shown in many roles, he can add a certain amount of sarcasm to any character, which would be perfect for Tony Stark/Iron Man.
A veteran of superhero movies, Franco could now take a turn as one of the good guys. He’s a fine actor who knows his way around action films and would also bring some wit and a sarcastic flair.
He’s got the look and also has some previous superhero experience, playing Bullseye in the 2003 Daredevil movie. When rumors first circulated that Downey Jr. could leave the role, Farrell was actually considered the frontrunner to replace him.
Perhaps superhero flicks are a little below the standards of Mr. DiCaprio. But once he (finally) wins his Oscar for The Revenant, what does he have left to accomplish?
Cooper may be the perfect fit for Iron Man. He just seems like he could effortlessly slip into the role without the story missing a beat, right?
Certainly a dark horse in this race, Reeves looks the part and certainly knows action movies. But would he have the chops to play the charming Tony Stark?
Who? Simpkins played Harley Keener in Iron Man 3, the kid who helped Tony Stark find the Madarin. Ring a bell now? Well, he could be in line to play Iron Man in the next film. There is just one little issue: He’s 14 years old. So, how would this work exactly? Well, the film isn’t scheduled to be released until 2019, which would give young Simpkins some time to grow, both as an actor and, you know, literally. Plus, the film would be coming out right after Avengers: Infinity War Part 2, so he could be introduced in that one to lessen the blow a little. It may be a long shot, but it is intriguing nonetheless.
We all knew that Robert Downey Jr. wouldn’t play Iron Man forever, but the first time we see somebody new in the role, it will still be a bit of a shock. But that doesn’t mean an actor just as capable can’t pick up the slack.
Who do you want to see as the new Iron Man?
