Romantic Horror Movies for Valentine’s Day

Whether you’re lovingly coupled, delightfully single, or somewhere in between, sometimes a traditional romantic comedy just won’t cut it. Below are a list of 5 semi-twisted romantic movies that you can delight in without becoming too much of a Hallmark Card this Valentine’s Day. Katrina Keller and Victoria Irwin give you their watch list:

Burying The Ex

While I don’t think this girl was initially the worst girlfriend of all time, this movie is still hilariously funny. After moving in together, Max and Evelyn begin to experience serious problems. Frustrated, Max decides to end the relationship. Evelyn is tragically hit by a bus right before he can break up with her…and after he’s just so happened to accidentally trigger a Satan Genie that thinks his desire for the two to be together forever is a real wish. As Max tries to move on, Evelyn rises from the grave and hilarity ensues. Okay, really screwed up twisted hilarity, but hilarity nonetheless. This film is currently streaming on Netflix.

Wristcutters: A Love Story

Now I know what you’re thinking; a movie about suicidal depression can’t be funny. I beg you to check this out. After committing suicide after a failed relationship, a young man (Patrick Fugit) realizes that suicide has only placed him in a world of eternal monotony. When he decides to try to find his ex-girlfriend, after discovering she may have killed herself too, he soon discovers there is much more to this world than expected. Spoiler Alert: Tom Waits is the best and there’s a happy ending.

Only Lovers Left Alive

This is hands down one of my favorite films of all time. Thought I’ve intentionally sworn off most vampire films, Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston are just too brilliant for words in this. Add in John Hurt, Anton Yelchin (yes, again) and Mia Wasikowska and you’ve got the only film set in Detroit I’ve ever loved. The lines are brilliant, the settings incredible and the music to die for.

Life After Beth

Sometimes you have to watch a zombie movie because Aubrey Plaza is a Freaking International Treasure! When Zach’s girlfriend dies suddenly, he is devastated. When she returns from the dead and is hidden by his parents, he is confused. When she begins to eat people, he is horrified. But, it’s Aubrey Plaza so it’s hilarious and morbid in equal measure! This film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

Slither

James Gunn wrote and directed this horror comedy starring Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, and Michael Rooker. Fillion plays small town sheriff Bill Pardy who is still hung up on his high school crush, Starla. She’s married to the redundantly named Grant Grant. Things take a turn for the decidedly gross when Grant becomes host to a parasitic alien worm. Slither is creepy and hilarious – just the sort of thing you should be looking for in a date movie.
