Leather-Bound Editions of the First Shannara Trilogy Coming Up!

There are books, and then there are books. Sometimes, a reader wants a paperback copy to sling into a backpack or purse and carry around everywhere, without worrying about batteries or (too much) book cost. Sometimes, an e-reader with every book in the series in one slim case is good. But for some books, the special books, one wants more; maybe a hardcover that will still be readable after a century or so. Or, maybe, for the really special books, a leather-bound edition. Grim Oak Press is going to be adding to the availability of copies by offering leather-bound editions of the first Shannara Trilogy and Terry Brooks’ writing guide and memoir, Sometimes the Magic Works.

In addition to being leather-bound, the books will have new illustrations. Marc Simonetti, no stranger to fantasy books–he has illustrated The Name of the Wind and A Song of Ice and Fire among many others–will be illustrating the Shannara trilogy. Nate Taylor, who has also worked with Patrick Rothfuss, will be illustrating Sometimes the Magic Works

The books sound beautiful, though unfortunately for us, they will be in extremely limited editions:

  • Barring setbacks, The Sword of Shannara will publish in late 2016.
  • Elfstones & Wishsong will publish in 2017.
  • The Shannara Lettered Editions will be $400 each, limited to 52 copies, leather-bound, slip-cased, ribboned, and feature a double-page full-color insert from Marc Simonetti as well as eight single-page black and white illustrations. The copies will be signed by Terry Brooks and Marc Simonetti.
  • The Shannara Limited Editions will be $100 each, limited to 1000 copies, leather-bound, not slip-cased, ribboned, and will feature eight single-page black and white illustrations. The copies will be signed by Terry Brooks and Marc Simonetti.
  • Sometimes the Magic Works will publish first in 2016.
  • The Lettered Edition will be limited to 52 copies, selling for $100. It will be leather-bound, feature a ribbon, a slip case, numerous illustrations, a double-page illustration featuring Terry with some of his favorite characters, and it will be signed by Terry Brooks and artist Nate Taylor.
  • The Limited Edition will be limited to 1000 copies, selling for $50. It will not be slip-cased but it will feature a ribbon and numerous illustrations. It will be signed by Terry Brooks and artist Nate Taylor.

Readers can place orders by filling out the form here and can admire many of Marc Simonei’s works on his web page.
