If there is anything the last several years worth of movies and books should have taught us is never
play a game of any kind.
Of course, we keep on playing them, and the movies will keep on warning us. In this case, Vee Delmonico (Emma Roberts) a serious high school student decides it is time she took some risks and accepts a dare to play Nerve–a gigantic game of dare. In return for monetary rewards, players follow instructions sent to them. These get increasingly outrageous, and soon she and her partner find themselves taking larger and larger risks. Meanwhile, friends and strangers alike watch and make bets on the outcome.
It is, of course, entirely predictable that Vee’s partner will be not only a “mysterious stranger,” but a handsome one. That said, the trailer gives a good sense of the movie’s pace and tone, and it definitely has potential as a summer popcorn movie, the sort that will have you on the edge of your seat, making exactly the sort of guesses her unwitting friends are as they watch her play.
Nerve comes to the theaters on July 27. Watch the trailer and let us know: Are You a #WatcherOrPlayer?
