If you can’t get enough of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful, the new comic from Titan Comics will not disappoint. Written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns, an actual script writer for the show, the comic maintains the feel and pacing of the television show. The series begins at the start of the show, focusing on the backstory between Mina Harker and Vanessa Ives. After being confronted by Mina on a quiet beach, Vanessa realizes that something is very wrong with her former friend. She connects with Mina’s father, Sir Malcolm Murray. With the help of Sembene, they go to find out more about the vampiric infestations of London and team up with an unexpected support to try and find Mina.
Penny Dreadful #1 is a combination of excellent storytelling and fantastic art. Louie De Matinis’s style is breathtaking in some instances, combining the day to day of Victorian London with the creatures of the Demimonde. The end of the comic does have a surprising addition to the cast, but one that makes perfect sense in regards to the vampire story line. I only wish the figure was included in the TV show itself.
Penny Dreadful #1 is now available from Titan Comics. I can’t wait for issue #2.
