Alright Hamilton Trash, we’ve got some great news for you. Disney announced today that Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator and star of Broadway’s hit show Hamilton and actress Emily Blunt will star in the upcoming sequel to Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Returns.
The film is expected to be released December 25, 2018. The director and producing team from Into the Woods will be reunited, including Rob Marshall, John Deluca, Marc Plat. The screenplay will be written by David Magee and based off The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers. Tony Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Witman will be writing the original score and songs.
Blunt will play the title role of Mary Poppins, while Miranda will play a new character- a street lamplighter named Jack.
“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation,” says Marshall.
