For the truly devoted Harry Potter fan, the Pottermore Website has been a sources of keeping the magic of Harry Potter and the Wizard world alive. Author J.K. Rowling often talks about the journals she kept, with all of her notes and tidbits about the world she had created. Since the site opened in 2011, fans have been treated to crumbs of knowledge here and there, further expanding what we know about the characters, places, and all magical things that we fans have come to love. In anticipation for the new movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Rowling published new information about the other wizarding schools around the world earlier this year and now a story about Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the United States based wizard school.
Along with the video, Rowling has published the story of school’s founder Isolt Seyer, the founding of the school, how each of the new houses came to be and the differences between Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and its US counterpart.
Isolt Seyer is the descendent of Hogwart’s founder Salazar Slytherin. Tragedy struck when she was five years old leaving her an orphan and in the care of her mother’s estranged sister Gormlaith Gaunt. (The name Gaunt ring a bell?) Isolt escapes her aunt to the new world abroad the Mayflower where she encounters strange new creatures, meets two orphaned boys and falls in love with a No-Maj, an American Non-Magic person. She shares the tales she grew up hearing of Hogwarts to the children, which inspires her to start her own school in the newly blossoming United States. You can read the rest of Islot’s story on the Pottermore website.
Pottermore members also have the opportunity to be sorted into one of the four houses of Ilvermorny. These houses are Wampas, Pukwudgie, Thunderbird, and Horned Serpent.
“It is sometimes said of the Ilvermorny houses that they represent the whole witch or wizard: the mind is represented by Horned Serpent; the body, Wampus; the heart, Pukwudgie and the soul, Thunderbird. Others say that Horned Serpent favours scholars, Wampus, warriors, Pukwudgie, healers and Thunderbird, adventurers.”
It’s interesting to note that while the Horned Serpent and Pukwudgie houses show similarities to the Hogwarts houses of Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff respectively, there is no clear correlation to Gryffindor or Slytherin. One could make the case that Wampas and Thunderbird are both parts of Gryffindor and a correlation to Slytherin was simply left out. Another thought is that rather then looking at the personality of the witch or wizard, the students are sorted by their role in society be it the scholar, warrior, adventurer or healer.
Fans around the world have been rushing to read the latest release about the wizard world which as lead to more excitement about the Fall release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, as well as the release of the play and manuscript of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
