It’s feature time! I hope you are all ready for this week’s guest as he’s a handful! Why is he handful you wonder? Have you ever heard of Deadpool? Have you ever MET a Deadpool cosplayer? Yeah…handful…in the most amusing way possible! Please welcome the ever vigilant Anthony Phoenix Cosplay!
I work as a mechanic, my favorite comic book character is Deadpool, my favorite game series is mass effect and a favorite movie would be Face/Off. Also, I’m 31 yrs old.
You said Mass Effect. [looks at her readers] He said Mass Effect!!!! Ok, fangirling aside…I appreciate you sharing a bit about yourself. SOOOOO…how were you lured into the wonderful world of cosplay?
I first got into cosplay mostly because of Halloween. I was really getting into Deadpool at the time and I got a Deadpool costume put together. When I went out to a few public events, I got a lot of praise for it and even won second place in a costume contest. After that I started attending conventions, expanding my costume selection and even joined some charity groups for costuming.
Since it sounds as though you had an instant “knack” for costuming have you taken that ability and applied it as a business?
Cosplay isn’t really a business for me, though I have done several photoshoots with photographers and had prints done. I mostly specialize in charity work, where I will dress up as a superhero and attend hospital events or anything to raise awareness for a cause.
I really like how many cosplayers are using their skills for charity. It’s very inspiring. Have any sponsors or companies approached you yet?
I haven’t had any sponsors, but I’ve had the pleasure of working with other cosplayers and photographers at their booths and it’s been an amazing experience. Everyone in the cosplay community is wonderful and it’s always great meeting new people and groups.
What is your dream cosplay? [secretly crosses fingers hoping you’ll say Mass Effect]
My dream cosplay is mostly my current one, Deadpool. But if there was one that I would love to do, it’d be Commander Sheperd from the Mass Effect series.
YES! Commander Shepard for the win! I seriously have an addiction to Mas Effect…my apologies. With as much time as you have spent in the cosplay community what advice would you like to offer current and aspiring cosplayers?
My advice for current cosplayers is to just have fun with it. I see a lot of people that take it too seriously or try and do it to be famous, but that’s not for everyone. Just enjoy yourself, cosplay as whatever you want and eventually you may get to where you want to be.
For future cosplayers: start with something simple or someone that you are familiar with. A lot of famous cosplayers you see now didn’t start off making amazing and intricate costumes and you shouldn’t feel disheartened by not being able to make anything to that level yet. It takes a lot of practice and patience, but it’s worth it in the end.
Have any “cosfamous” people inspired you? Or are there local cosplayers that you look up to?
It’s hard to say who my cosplay role model is since most cosplayers I know are female, but I do have to say that I am a huge fan of D-Piddy and all of the videos and costumes he manages to come up with, especially with the ability to stay completely anonymous.
Thank you so very much for visiting us! We wish you the best in your charitable endeavors and hope to see more from you in the future!
