Entertainment Weekly released some concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, drawn by Andy Park. The work shows several familiar faces in Drax, Yondu, Star-Lord, Rocket, Nebula, and Gamora. Also present are new and new-ish team members, Mantis and Baby Groot. Mantis may be familiar to readers of the comic, though like other characters she is being given a revised background for the movie. In particular, executive producer Jonathan Schwartz specifies taht “She has never really experienced social interaction. . . Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.” That last is putting it mildly. Which traits will she pick up? Drax’s literalism? Rocket’s technical savvy? Quill’s vocabulary?
It will be good to have another woman on the team. Maybe two others, if Nebula is there as a team member rather than an enemy. Hey, one can wish, right? It’s also evident that Groot has not finished growing since the first film’s dramatic ending. From what Schwartz says, this is the case mentally as well as physically; we don’t even know whether he will grow up to be the same Groot we knew and loved or if he’ll develop further character quirks–like, say, a continued addiction to dancing.
James Gunn, who also posted the image on his Facebook page, says that it “led us a lot as we were developing the film,” and promised further revelations about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 at next week’s San Diego Comic Con.
