JT LeRoy stunned the world with intimate stories of life as the child of a truck stop sex worker. Famous actors, writers, designers, and musicians lined up to spend time with LeRoy and get a piece of his talent. However, the image of JT LeRoy was merely an avatar for housewife and former phone-sex operator Laura Albert. In 2006, the New York Times unmasked her for the world. In the new documentary Author: The JT LeRoy Story goes behind the initial days of Albert’s work and follows it down to her eventual unmasking.
The film is a partnership between Amazon Films and Magnolia Pictures. Directed by Jeff Feuerzeig, the film features famous names like NPR’s Terry Gross, Winona Ryder, Courtney Love, Madeline Brand and other celebrities caught up in the craze.
