Lottie Person is just your average Fashion Blogger. She’s the picture of perfection online. She’s glamorous. She’s fashionable and she suffers from some of the worst allergies the world has seen. So what’s a girl to do when she finds herself covered in snot day in and day out? For Lottie, that’s simple: put on a pretty face and fiercely take on the world. On the outside Lottie is outgoing, beautiful and confident but if you take a deeper look at her you’ll notice her “perfection” is a mask waiting to fall off. Written by Bryan Lee O’Malley with art by Leslie Hung, Snotgirl chronicles the life of Lottie Person: An online fashion blogger with a penchant for style and a weak grasp on actuality.
The art is lovely and very reminiscent of Paradise Kiss which was a manga written and illustrated by Ai Yazawa between 1999 and 2003. It has subtle manga undertones with vibrant colors and vivacious characters. Each design is carefully crafted to reflect a modern trend or echo a past fashion.
The story is also easy to relate to if you are an internet savvy, fashion blogging connoisseur. The tale delves into the delicate balance of reality and sub-reality that so many people in this generation struggle with. Lottie is popular among her blogging friends and yet, she can’t seem to get any of them to sit down at a meal with her. Sure, they’ll chat with her to the wee hours of the morning online but a single in person rendezvous makes them scatter for the shadows. This, paired with the fact that Lottie is crossing the border of her late twenties, leaves the trendy diva in emotional dumps. How is a girl going to make new friends in a world that is constantly “logged on”? Then, a ray of hope appears…or is it just a delusional attempt at normalcy?
