Lucas Films has given us a somber, beautiful new trailer for Rogue One, a trailer full of Empire ships looming over planets, stormtroopers attacking the defenseless, and a general sense that things are not going well for the Rebellion. The trailer does give a few more glimpses of the heroes themselves. They are a somber bunch this time, as well–the snappy comebacks are gone and we’re seeing a group ready to tackle impossible odds.
There is sill some humor, of an odd sort, provided by the looming K-2SO, an efficient-looking droid who is definitely not a protocol droid. He’s set to become a favorite simply by being not cute and bubbly like the adorable BB-8 and the feisty R2D2–both of whom are awesome, by the way, but a new kind of robot will be a welcome addition to the gang.
Lucasfilm’s Rogue One, which takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, tells the story of unlikely heroes who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star.
The cast includes Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, and Forest Whitaker. “Rogue One” is directed by Gareth Edwards, produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur, and Simon Emanuel, executive produced by John Knoll and Jason McGatlin, and co-produced by John Swartz and Kiri Hart.
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opens in theaters December 16, 2016!
