A month ago, the rumor mill started running that Tony Stark would be stepping down as Iron Man in the Invincible Iron Man Series. Riri Williams is taking on the mantle, but not the name. According to Wired Magazine, Ms. Williams will be known as Ironheart. The 15 year-old MIT prodigy was hand picked by Tony Stark to step into his job after his own recent setbacks.
According to Wired, the name came from a group discussion:
“Iron Woman seemed old fashioned to some,” he says. “Iron Maiden looked like a legal nightmare. And Ironheart, coined by Joe Quesada, after I told him my planned story for Riri, speaks not only to the soul of the character but to the Iron Man franchise as a whole.
Riri Williams is another in a very inclusive Marvel Universe. That’s not just good for female readers, it’s great for all of us.
