One of the greatest frustrations for Doctor Who fans is the lost episodes, the ones that BBC either failed to preserve or actively destroyed. Among these is the now fifty-year old The Power of the Daleks, the Second Doctor’s first episode, and the first episode ever to feature a Doctor regenerating. There is no film left. None.
There are, however, audio recordings, and BBC is animating the six episodes for release on DVD on November 21, 2016. According to Charles Norton, producer and director of the black-and-white animation, this restoration was
the most ambitious Doctor Who archive restoration ever attempted and we’re all very honoured to be a part of such a an exciting project. Intelligent, suspenseful and magnificently staged, Power of the Daleks is one of the great lost classics of 1960s television and a superb example of the black and white era at its finest.
The show finds the Doctor and his Companions at the time, Polly (Anneke Wills) and Ben (Michael Craze) confronting the Daleks on the planet Vulcan while dealing with the Doctor’s regeneration.
The Power Of The Daleks will be released in the BBC Store on Saturday, November 5 followed by the DVD on Monday, November 21, 2016. In the US, the show airs Saturday, November 12 on BBC AMERICA and will be available the following day to stream on BBCAmerica.com and the BBC AMERICA app.
