Galavant Season 1 – Binge Report

Have you ever been aware of something, but then gone, “eh…not for me”? Never ever listen to that voice. I promise you, if you listen to that voice, you miss out on the coolest things. Although…with the magical thing that is Netflix, you can remedy your previous stupid decision making. You can go and do this now, by watching Galavant.

Galavant is a musical. No wait it’s a fantasy. No wait it’s a sitcom. No wait it’s a…It’s everything. The most perfect amalgamation of all the best tv things ever. Think of Robin Hood:Men in Tights, throw in a little Mama Mia, and just a dash of Deadpool, and maybe, just maybe you have the perfection that is Galavant. There is singing, sarcasm, and a good deal of breaking the fourth wall. If you give it the time, you too will be sucked in. I saw it on Netflix and decided to give it a try. I had heard of it. Seen it when it was on tv, but I never watched it. What a mistake. Well, maybe not. Watching it on Netflix meant I could watch the entire first season in one sitting. With no commercials.

I was hooked. My 9 year old daughter even enjoyed it, though some of the humor definitely went over her head. Together we sat and laughed. And laughed. And then laughed some more. And you will too, because it is funny. Side hurting, laughing til you cry, funny.

king-dick-from-galavant This man right here, Timothy Omundson as King Richard is probably the best casting decision ever made. He’s inept and sometimes evil, and he will make you laugh like nothing ever has.  While Galavant is the star of the show, King Richard is the foil, and it’s pure magic. I don’t want to give much away, you really need to watch it.  Even if you don’t like musicals (which I do) you should enjoy it. Just make like Madalena does and roll your eyes every time the music starts.

Now aside from Gal and King Richard, there is also Vinnie Jones as Gareth. And if you’ve ever seen Vinnie in anything else, you’ll recognize his performance here. He’s basically the same character he’s ever played, and  I kinda love it. It really adds to the whole idea behind the show. It’s a flat out send up of Game of Thrones and Vinnie Jones is a huge part of why it works.

And I cant forget to mention the other two most important characters, Princess Isabella and Sid. The two who keep Gal going when he wants to give up. The conscious he forgot he had. The Robin to Gal’s Batman…oh and let’s not forget, the true love of his life. Because Madalena is not right for him at all. (See, giving away too much, I must stop)

Ugh, I want to go on and on. I should definitely mention the amazing guest appearances, Rutger Hauer, Ricky Gervais, John Stamos, Hugh Bonneville and Weird Al all appear to infuse the story with even more awesomeness.  I could go on. I want to go on. But..I also sorta want to watch the second series. It makes me sad, knowing there won’t be any more after this.  Like another amazing show before them, Firefly, this show didn’t live long enough. But I thank Netflix for bringing it to me. I don’t want to imagine what my life would be like had I completely missed the opportunity to be amazed by the knight that is Galavant.
