Trusting the selection of heroes to objects of power usually turns out well–surprisingly well–but it cannot be denied that these magical objects develop a strange, twisted sense of humor over time. They tend to pick some little nobody to pull the sword out of the stone without warning them ahead of time. The magical amulet in Trollhunters is a case in point: It falls from the hand of a powerful, experienced fighter and chooses an ordinary, just trying to get by, teen to defend two worlds. It’s pretty cute, actually, and the two trolls sent to mentor/serve the new hero are adorable, in their own multi-armed, many-eyed kind of way.
Guillermo del Toro, maker of monsters, has constructed another wonderful, twisted new world: There are the varied good trolls (including a few that are suspiciously familiar) plus a wide range of monsters. There’s the big troll shown early on and then his minions including a nasty, spidery-looking creature out to wreak mayhem. It’s a Netflix show, so it will all be available at once, on December 23, 2016. Too close to Christmas for binge-watching, do you think? Or just in time?
