The latest trailer for Wonder Woman shows just how much she deserves that title. It is both visually stunning and heartbreaking. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) carries the action in both her civilian and heroic identities, showing herself as an outstanding fighter. Yet, as she looks back at her old black and white photo, and we see Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) claim that he is fighting “The war to end all wars,” it’s hard not to feel the heartbreak. Everyone is so naive at this point: Sure, the war is terrible, but it is going to end war–and Godot brings an innocence to her portrayal that cannot last much past the war’s end, if even to that point.
This movie may turn out to have some unexpected depth as well as glorious action.
