Angela Lansbury is no stranger to a Disney film. She’s starred in Bedknobs and Broomsticks and was Mrs. Potts in the animated Beauty and the Beast. Her time in theater and film gave us classics like Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Mame, Blithe Spirit, Gypsy, and everyone’s favorite sleuth on Murder, She Wrote.

Christmas 2018 just became a whole lot brighter as Angela Lansbury has been announced as the newest addition to the cast of Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns. This sequel to the 1964 Disney classic is currently being filmed at Shepperton Studios. Lansbury will play The Balloon Lady, a character from the PL Travers’ series of Mary Poppins books.

The film has an incredible cast already, including Emily Blunt, Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Molly Weasley (aka Julie Walters), Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth), Meryl Streep, Pixie Davis, Nathaniel Saleh, and Joel Dawson. Oh, and Dick Van Dyke will be there too.  The whole shebang is directed and produced by Rob Marshall. We might be just a touch super excited.

Here is the synopsis from Disney:

The film is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Streep).

Mary Poppins Returns comes to theaters Christmas Day 2018.
