Hellboy and the B.P.R.D 1954: Ghost Moon is a new story set in China. In this story Hellboy and Susan go to China to help out an friend of Professor Bruttenholm who is calling about monsters. It’s always monsters, you know? Hellboy and Susan meet Mr Childe, who reminds me a bit of every sneaky spy type guy from every movie from the 60’s. He was on a mission from the Professor’s old friend and things went sideways. A women is hurt, a man is missing and it’s up to the BPRD to figure it out.
This story almost reads as a spy novel rather than a comic and that is part of why I love Hellboy so much, you just never know what you’re going to get. Sometimes it’s an occult story, sometimes it’s a spy story, but every time it’s fabulous. I like how you get to see Susan be sassy, about where she is from and what she can do. I enjoyed seeing Hellboy and his other B.P.R.D. buddy fighting the ghost warriors (?) together and sounding like a buddy cop movie form the late 80’s. I even like that with very little information about why what is happening is happening, you still get sucked in. And I’ll go one step further, even though the end was a horrible, terrible, no good cliffhanger, I am still going to wait not so patiently for the next issue to find out exactly what the monsters are. Cause I want to call them ghost warriors, but it’s never really explained. It’s obviously implied that they are a direct result of what is happening (not giving spoilers is hard, y’all) but whether they’re on the side of good or evil is to be determined. There is still so much we don’t know. And I cannot wait to find out how it all plays out.
