Netflix has released a short teaser for the upcoming prequel to The Dark Crystal, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. The teaser itself is as much a look at the creation of the original movie as it is at the upcoming miniseries. There are glimpses of work on the original plus archival footage of Henson describing the original as “probably the hardest thing I’ve ever worked on” and “of all projects it’s the one that I’m most proud of.” No pressure there, Netflix.
The miniseries is off to a good start, though, with Brian Froud, The Dark Crystal‘s conceptual designer on board and the by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop hard at work on the world’s inhabitants. If anyone can capture the original’s look, it is these people.
As delightful as the idea of a new piece of the universe, the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance runs into the problem most prequels run into: We already know how things ended. In this case, the miniseries covers the adventures of three Gelfling looking to save their world from the Skeksis. And (spoiler here): They didn’t. That’s the whole point of the original movie. So–can Netflix and the Jim Henson company manage a story compelling enough to overcome this difficulty? And, can they sustain this for ten episodes?
It will inevitably be a beautiful tale. Will it be well told as well? What do you think?
