May 2017 Loot Crate--Rocket & Groot Q-Fig

This figure makes the May 2017 Loot Crate worthwhile all on its own.

I usually try to avoid spoilers on the Loot Crate stuff, which can take some doing, but I’ve been hearing bits and pieces about the May box for a while now, and I’ve gotten quite excited.

Let’s see if it lives up to its hype.

Opening the lid:

Oh wow! Right on top is a QFig with Rocket and Baby Groot. Yes. Twice yes. If any characters ever deserved to be Q-figged, it’s these to. And, like all the Q-Figs I’ve seen so far, they’re well-designed and well-painted. Rocket even has a little bomb with him. Looks like there are no alternates on this one, so everyone will get the good figures. What can I say? I’m like most of the rest of the world–Baby Groot makes me smile.

Love the color, not too keen on the way it’s as wide as it is tall.

Next to the Q-Fig is a T-shirt. It’s bright red! That’s a change from the usual dark colors of these things. It’s The Goonies, with a skull and crossbones. Can I confess here that I’ve never seen The Goonies? It’s been on my to-watch list for a while, but so have a lot of things. It’s a nice-looking shirt. For one thing, it is red, for another, it has good, clean black lettering and logo. The drawback is that this is one of the super-sized shirts made with thin fabric. It looks nice now, and it will be comfortable, but that neckline is going to stretch out of shape in no time, and the shirt is almost as wide as it is long. That means around the house or as PJ tops, not out on the street geek-bragging, even for people who have seen the film.

Under this is an Art of Coloring Star Wars book. It’s got thirty images and nice, thick pages. There are some interesting patterns here, and then a few that assume someone wants to color the same rather plain object multiple times–say, C3PO’s head. It’s the same with the scenes. There are a couple of intricate movie-inspired scenes–Yoda in Dagobah, for one, and a picture of Princess Leia that could get quite complex if one wanted. And then there is a picture of Han Solo. I’m not really sure what anyone is supposed to do with that. The guy is a colorful character, but he’s not colorfully clad. The man wears black and white! He’s pretty much pre-colored already, and the image has no background. Let’s say that the book has twenty-nine images, then, and move on. Oh–the book also comes with six colored pencils and a plastic pencil sharpener suitable for carrying on planes.

Finally, there is a set of embroidered patches from Destiny. With some patience, an iron, and maybe a sewing machine you can add Hunter, Warlock, or Titan patches to a shirt, pair of jeans, or whatever.

The Loot Pin is from The Last Airbender . It’s an exclusive, glow-in-the-dark Aang pin.Glow-in-the-Dark Aaang Loot Pin

The Loot Crate box is the most elaborate one I’ve seen to date: It has punch out shapes and can be folded into the Ghost from Destiny. Impressive! So is the patience it takes to put it together.

So, does the Crate live up to its hype? Yes and no. Not really because the nature of hype tends to blow things way out of proportion and to create vague happy thoughts undergrounded in anything. But yes–it’s a good crate. The Rocket/Groot Q-Fig and the Star Wars coloring book boost it out of the ordinary range.

What is your favorite part of the May 2017 Loot Crate?

TC Disclosure: I received this crate in return for an honest review./
