Poor Kensho… he is stuck in a muddle of his own making and I fear that it is only going to get worse before it gets better. In this, the fourth issue of The Power of the Dark Crystal, so much is going on. The Skeksies are jailed again, but one escaped and is doing is level best to get that shard just for himself. Thurma has Kensho convinced that helping her is the right thing to do, despite his own misgivings. Jen is being pulled in five different directions, all by advisers who think they know the best way to solve the problem. And then there is Aughra, Aughra who is shouting “it’s the end of the world!” and going on about prophecies. Like I said, its a lot. And it tugs at your heart.
My favorite bit of this issue is when Kensho stumbles upon the path that Thurma took to get to the crystal, and sees how she left it charred. How his beautiful land was destroyed by her. It makes him question helping her, and I think it’s an important moment in the series so far. And it leads to their separation, which I also think is important because it forces Kensho to decide how important Thurma is to him. (Mild Spoilers- I’m curious if Thurma’s story might be a nod to the direction that the Thurma/Kensho relationship will go…)
I’m loving this story, it’s so much fun being back in this world that I fell in love with as a child. The Archaia creators and writers are doing such a fabulous job with this story and I cannot wait to see how it is all going to play out. As always, 5 stars to The Power of the Dark Crystal.
