I don’t know if I’ve ever said this out-loud but I LOVE KINGSMAN.
I loved everything about the Matthew Vaughn directed action-comedy that centers around a super secret spy organization, the eponymous Kingsman. The main narrative centers around Galahad (played excellently by Colin Firth) and Eggsy (yes, that’s his real nickname played by Taron Egerton) who is taken on to be one of the newest in the Kingsman ranks. The story is witty, sharp, satirical and violent.
But today, thanks to the wonders of San Diego ComiCon we just got a new trailer for the sequel, Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle. Now, 2016 was an interesting dumpster fire of a year and I felt that everything I was excited for ended up in bitter disappointment. I have not been this hyped for a movie in at least a year. The trailer is fast-paced, violent, stylish and wonderful. Kingsman 2. In this second trailer we get a better look at the American Kingsman counterpart, the Statesman and with it new additions to the cast like Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges (who both look amazing and very American). The humor is fast, the jokes land about as hard as the punches and it sounds like we get a villain that could rival Samuel L. Jackson’s performance as Valentine in the last movie and Halle Berry looks like a great foil to tech wiz Merlin (played by Mark Strong).
I am so excited for this movie but there is one slight thing that irks me:
SPOILER IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FIRST MOVIE:
I’m irked by Colin Firth’s appearance in the movie. He looks great and his portrayal of Galahad was excellent but he did die in the first movie. He was shot in the head and the movie even says “You don’t exactly come back from that.” But the first trailer and some leaked press revealed rather early on that Firth would be returning. The second trailer confirms and elaborates that he will once more have a large role in this picture. Firth’s character arc was mostly finished by the end of the movie and his death was important to everyone in the Kingsman organization and for the climax of the film. I didn’t need to see him return but that’s a minor nitpick considering how bloody excited I am for this film!
I’m excited for this movie and the continuation of the story. This trailer had me on the edge of my seat, laughing maniacally in the office and dying for me.
