Hellboy Gives Russian Fairy Tales More Accessibility in ‘Koschei: The Deathless’ #1

Of the most famous fairy tales in Russian culture Baba Yaga and Koschei the Deathless are probably the best known. I’m sure more than a fair few of our readers just asked “wait, who?” Taking a beloved figure of Russian mythology,  Hellboy creator Mike Mignolia has created a spinoff series from the Hellboy comics to continue the story of Koschei the deathless after his attempted assassination of our big red antihero. The new series begins with Koschei and Hellboy sitting down for a cup of something, discussing life after attempted murder.

Koschei is a tragic and seriously messed up figure. As a soldier he is a force. As the slave of a demon creature, he’s freaky. Combine the two and you’re gonna get killed. Add in the typical of Mike Mignolia’s bleak colors and thick black lines, and you’ve got a story that is definitely Russian. Koschei the Deathless begins the haunting tale of one of the freakiest figures in mythology.

Koschei the Deathless #1 is available January 3, 2017 from Dark Horse Comics.
