Production Starts on Disney’s ‘Maleficent 2’

Ladies and gentlemen, it looks like the prosthetic cheekbones are coming back. Today Disney announced the beginning of production for Maleficent 2, a sequel to the 2014 film staring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning. The film was well received, but it still seems surprising that Disney would make a sequel for a film that seemed to wrap up the happy ending pretty well.

The sequel is set to bring aboard Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith, Chiwetel Ejofor, Ed Skrein, Robert Lindsay, and Harris Dickinson.  The original cast members will be reprising their roles, so that’s a relief.

Here’s the official synopsis:

A fantasy adventure that picks up several years after “Maleficent,” in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora, “Maleficent II” continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.

No word yet on the official release date for Maleficent 2.
