Horror Short Goodnight Gracie Now Available Through ALTER

The latest offering by new free horror streaming group ALTER is Goodnight Gracie, a short film written and directed by Stellan Kendrick. Goodnight Gracie has just finished the festival circuits with 100 screenings and over 40 awards and nominations. ALTER is a new, free-to-stream platform for novel and grounded stories.

Goodnight Gracie stars Caige Coulter as Gracie, a small girl who goes to investigate a strange sound downstairs. Courtney Gains of Children of the Corn and The ‘Burbs also stars as Billy, with Zoe Simpson Dean and Brad Goodman rounding out the cast. The film was produced by Kendrick and Gloria Sandoval, and executive produced by Graham Wetterhahn.

From the Synopsis: “When christ-loving eight year old GRACIE startles awake to a loud BANG, she assumes it’s just mom and stepdad at it again downstairs. But a blood-curdling scream suggests something more sinister, so Gracie grabs a flashlight and heads to the landing to investigate. She gazes in terror at the sight of her mother’s body hacked into a grizzly pile of gore. Her stepfather locks eyes with her, ax in hand. Gracie flees to the sanctuary of her room. Rather than fight back physically, Gracie desperately calls upon Jesus to banish the evil from her house.”

Awards and nominations aside, this film felt more like a scene rather than a completed story, which is a hard problem to solve with a film that only runs three and a half minutes. My biggest problem then boils down to the length of the film. Due to it being nearly a micro-short, a lot of questions are left nowhere near answered. But that is the problem with danger suddenly appearing at your door – it can only take a moment for your whole life to change.

Allie Shehorn steals the show with her incredible special effect makeup, and even though we will never know, I am fascinated by Gains’ Billy. Not getting more of that character is the real tragedy of this film.

Watch the film in its entirety below, and be sure to check out the rest of the films on ALTER.
