Listen, any time I get a chance to read anything by Mike Mignola, I jump. I have not been shy about my love for his style of storytelling, and Radio Spaceman is not the exception. (I didn’t think it would be) Press release is below and I am stupidly lucky that I got a chance to read it before it releases tomorrow. Let’s see if I can review it without spoilers.
On March 2, 2022, Dark Horse Comics will publish Radio Spaceman, an all-new two-issue comic book event by legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and acclaimed Black Cloud artist Greg Hinkle. This standalone steampunk space adventure is full of mystery, monsters, and awesome gadgets, and marks the first-ever comic book appearance for Radio Spaceman, based on Mignola’s viral pencil sketches. This all-new series is written by Mignola, with art by Hinkle, colors by award-winning Mignolaverse collaborator Dave Stewart, and lettering by longtime collaborator Clem Robins.
Okay, first of all – EEEEKKKK
Okay, phew. So I absolutely recognize parts of this issue (1 of 2) because a certain floating skeleton head is here. Secondly, this is more SCI FI than Mignola normally goes in, as I’d generally label his style as horror fantasy. This, this is outer space. Yes there is still the horror aspect (hello floating skeleton head) but there are aliens here as well! And, I’m not saying that my favorite comic writer made a nod to another popular horror writer, but there is a scene that pretty much screams “old gods” so…
Anyway. Moving on. Since Radio Spaceman is only a duo, there is a lot packed in here. There are also just enough question left here to make you desperately want the next issue.
Oh and also, if you’re not already sold simply based on it being a Mike Mignola story (you should be) let me sell you with two words. Frogs! Vampire!
Okay, no really I don’t want to spoil anything so that’s all you get. But uh humm.. run don’t walk.
