Ensign Bluemage Honor Renn may be skilled, but she definitely doesn’t have luck on her side. During her first naval posting, her ship is wrecked. Expecting to die amidst the ship’s wreckage, she is surprised to wake aboard a seemingly mythical ship known as The Touchstone. With her scarred hands coated in a magic called chimeric, she finds herself with additional powers. Rather than throw her overboard, the captain and crew use Honor to help track ships and continue their mission. Afterall, the Touchstone is spoken about only in whispers; a mysterious ship that comes and kills without mercy. As Honor remains with the quirky crew and mysterious captain, she soon learns what she learned in her military training is far from the truth. With a captain that doesn’t trust her, and a world she can’t return to, Honor must learn what to do with her newfound powers and not destroy those who have saved her in the process.
H. Leighton Dickson’s Ship of Spells is a creative fantasy novel with elaborate world building and a sentient ship. For fans of Fantasy, this is a fun ride. The book is another in the ever popular romantasy category that has gained traction on Tik Tok and other online options. As someone a bit burnt out on the genre, I’ll admit this book came to me at entirely the wrong time; it is still creative and enjoyable though, even for someone burnt out on the genre.
Ship of Spells is now available from Entangled Publishing.
