What the hell is going on?!
Pun intended and everything
The title promised hell on earth and it gave the readers pretty much hell on earth. Or at the very least, for the uninitiated. A military group are wading through a snow-covered Russia looking for a creature. A creature I can only assume is Hellboy. Their search is interrupted by the sudden appearance of a creature. Meanwhile, an old lady/child under a bell jar (no joke) is having conversation with a dead man. A dead man that apparently is the head of some organization.
Lost. I throw up my hands in the air. I am completely utterly lost.
Despite not making heads or tails, I kept on reading. That’s the thing about the Hellboy series. Even with no exposition, you’re swept along in the story. Curiosity just grabs at you. Other than that, I don’t have much to share. This was reading a snapshot of a story in a long ongoing series.
Here’s what I understand with the Hellboy comics. The first story arc is Plague of Frogs, all of which is collected in an omnibus (such as this ). The Hell on Earth series is the second story arc for the HellBoy comics. Knowing this just makes catching on this series so daunting.
Does jumping all willy nilly into this comic makes me want to retrace my steps? Most definitely. Hellboy has one dense of a history but it’s a history that I’m still interested in being immersed in. Very sad that Hellboy does not make an appearance in this issue but there must be a darn good reason (I think he’s actually in hell).
BPRD: Hell on Earth #128 is available at your local comic book retailer February 18, 2015.
It’s worth every penny investing in all the omnibus and library editions. I’ve been on board since 2004. Love every single title connected to Hellboy.
