As you may have noticed over the past few days, there are a ton of panels, screenings, and concerts at SXSW this weekend and next. While there’s no way for a single person to cover everything, here are 3 panels the nerds among us will love:

Panel: Giving the Tricorder Life Fifty Years After Star Trek

Sunday, March 13, 11:00am, JW Marriott, MedTech Stage

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek and an important cultural milestone where science fiction inspires reality, thanks to the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE. The epic sci-fi series was first to imagine a future where we all have portable, handheld wireless devices that monitor and diagnose our health conditions. Now, the Tricorder is coming to life.  Come hear medtech experts and Star Trek’s original doctor, Robert Picardo, explore the voyage of science fiction to reality and the future of personalized medicine.

Panel: Oceans vs Space: Which is Really the Final Frontier?

Sunday, March 13, 5:00pm, Westin, Paramount 2-3

While many consider space to be the “final frontier,” human beings have only explored an estimated 5% of our oceans. Over 500 people have journeyed into space and a dozen have walked on the surface of the moon, while only three human beings have explored the deepest known point of the ocean. Come listen as #TeamOcean dukes it out with #TeamSpace over which frontier will have the greatest impact on generations to come.
