Princess Elena of Avalor Joins the Disney Princesses in the Parks

A new princess will be coming to the Disney parks. The latest addition to the princess line, Princess Elena of Avalor is described as “a bold, caring, funny and clever 16-year-old who is ascendant to the throne in the fairytale kingdom of Avalor.” Her pose is wonderfully active and engaged.

ELENA

She will have her own TV series, Elena of Avalor this summer. Her world and culture are inspired by “diverse Latin cultures and folklore.” Here’s hoping for a truly wide range of tales for her kingdom.

One does have to wonder what, exactly is meant by “diverse Latin cultures and folklore”? That is a truly vague statement. Hopefully, we’ll be getting some more details soon–like the names of some tales they are drawing on, and the cultures of origin. As they are being retold by Disney, the’ll look very different from the original (See The Snow Queen becoming Frozen), but if nothing else, they provide a list of stories to look for in the library. Whatever the case, it is good to have another princess and to expand the range of cultures and colors in the princess line, and this princess will be fighting an evil sorceress, which means we get both a strong heroine and female villain.

Elena of Avalor

follows the story of Elena, who saves her kingdom from an evil sorceress and must now learn to rule with the support of her appointed Grand Council and some magical friends by her side. Elena’s adventures will lead her to understand that her new role requires thoughtfulness, resilience and compassion, the traits of all truly great leaders, while highlighting the importance of family and family traditions.

What do you think of Elena? Looking forward to the show?
