The Con is Not so Sweet in ‘Chasing Phil’

J.J. Wedick and Jack Brennan, two fresh FBI agents, ended up taking on one of the “most charming” con-men Phil Kitzer. With their careers on the line, both agents had to go up against their gut feeling and government bureaucracy to take down a con-man ring bigger than they ever thought.

Chasing Phil by David Howard is an incredibly well researched book. the book looks at individual conversations, the crazy world travel schedule of con-men and FBI agents alike, and various figures responsible for some of the biggest financial cons of the late 1970’s.  If you’re into crimes of the financial variety, this book will be fascinating. If you don’t want to go through highly detailed material to get the basic story, this will not be the book for you.

I had a difficult like with Chasing Phil, as I just kept finding myself losing interest. While Phil Kitzer is referred to as charming, I found him only frustratingly impulsive and wondering why he didn’t get caught much sooner with his tendencies to drop money like crazy. Howard is a great writer, but in all honesty I just could not get myself to care about Kitzer, and was more than once irritated by the fact that the FBI agents seemed to have a clear case, only have to go back to get more evidence.

Chasing Phil is now available from Crown Publishing.
