Star Scouts: The League of Lasers is the sequel to Star Scouts that my daughter and I reviewed last year. This was also meant to be a dual review, but my girl couldn’t get into this book. I’m not sure if it is because there was so much time between installments or if it’s just because her reading taste have changed drastically in the past few months, but she just wasn’t into it this time around.
Star Scouts: The League of Lasers brings Avani back with her Star Scout troop, and starts them on a new adventure. Avani is invited into the super secret League of Lasers and then things pretty much go wrong from there. Add in one overly proud yet stupid AI in charge of the spaceship, one alien planet and one former nemesis turned friend and you have this really sweet graphic novel.
Avani ends up trapped with Pam, who you know, hates Avani but they are forced to work together in order to survive. And the adventures they have make for a great read. There is so much to love about this graphic novel, really. Mike Lawrence makes great choices in characterization but it never feels forced. One of the star scouts casually drops a “I have two dads.” Pam takes off her helmet to show truly gorgeous hair. Avani’s dad takes learning his daughter is in space with stride and hops aboard a spaceship to save her. Seriously, it’s such a feel good story that by the end you’re almost wishing for at least a small dark moment to balance out all the goodness.
After the amazing mech suit hologram that Pam wields like a pro, I’m really interested to see how much further Mike Lawrence will go with this truly fun and touching group of characters. I’d give league of Laser a solid 4 stars!
