Set in the early days of the American “Old West”, Shadow Roads #1 begins the journey of a quartet as they explore the thin places between the human and spiritual worlds, the Crossroads. Educated in England, Henry Grey, a Native American man, and his English friend Barry come across an older man in a museum who offers a ceremonial dagger and a message to them. The message is for the Henry to take the blade and go home to the United States. The two board a train. Once the two go through a tunnel during their train ride, the dagger begins to glow and they are introduced to Abigail Redmayne and Kalfu who in turn introduce them to the realm of The Crossroads. Meanwhile, already in the West, a man nicknamed “Ghost Eyes” looks for a sharpshooting young woman to help him get revenge.
Shadow Roads #1 is a fun comic dealing with the supernatural and a fabled time period of American History. The comic does a great job of making fun of the idealized concepts of the Noble Savage and the exploitation of the Native American by outside cultures. It also tells a fun story that keeps the reader engaged and Abigail Redmayne’s outfit is a cosplayer’s dream. Shadow Roads is written by Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt, with art by A.C. Zamudio and coloring by Carlos N. Zamudio.
Shadow Roads #1 is available June 27 from Oni Press and is a great way to spend party of your day.
