Hello and greetings, heroes! If you are like me and are a long-time fan of Marvel comics and/or a long-time fan of the MCU: this is the moment we have been waiting for. This trailer is the culmination of 10 years of patience, dedication, time, money and energy. Mental facility, tears, blood and sweat have gone into keeping up with all the films, all the storylines and retaining a decade of comic book film knowledge on top of decades of comic book knowledge.
Today, we got a trailer for the 4th Avengers film: Avengers: EndGame. From the looks of it, the trailer picks up right where things left off with Thanos’ snap that ruined my heart for weeks on end and dealing with the immediate repercussions of the genocidal act. We see the remaining Avengers staggering to pull a plan together to defeat the Mad Titan and the tone of this trailer may be one of the darkest ever done in the MCU (longtime comic fans are likely more used to this as there is no joy in the original Infinity War storyline outside of Thanos trying to get it on with Lady Death).
This is a departure if your primary form of comic book entertainment is the MCU films and frankly, I am thrilled by the promise of a darker tone and consequences. If you’ve read my blog, then you know I left the first Infinity War film a little (a lot) angry at the writers, filmmakers and more for what was a pretty hollow attempt at capturing one of the best comic book sagas ever done. But this, this trailer gives me hope. I have hope that this will be dark with heart, emotional with consequences and powerful without being saccharine. I watched this trailer quietly at first then with raucous joy in my heart (the dark place that used to contain my heart, more like). I am so excited for this movie and this trailer is perfect: it doesn’t give too much away and it sets the tone for what will be the most important film in the MCU.
I can’t wait to see the film in April.
