Heralded Documentary Hail Satan? To Be Released Easter Weekend

Magnolia Pictures is set to release its latest Sundance submission, Hail Satan?, onto the unwitting masses just in time for us to eat our Pagan chocolate bunnies and chat about that one guy who rose from the dead. With liberty and blasphemy for all. Directed by Penny Lane and Produced by Gabriel Sedgewick, it gives the public a closer view at this once fringe religion, that with wit and the use of logic thrown in the face of their adversaries has rapidly began growing throughout America.

From the official press statement:

“Chronicling the extraordinary rise of one of the most colorful and controversial religious movements in American history, Hail Satan? is an inspiring and entertaining new feature documentary from acclaimed director Penny Lane (Nuts!, Our Nixon). When media-savvy members of the Satanic Temple organize a series of public actions designed to advocate for religious freedom and challenge corrupt authority, they prove that with little more than a clever idea, a mischievous sense of humor, and a few rebellious friends, you can speak truth to power in some truly profound ways. As charming and funny as it is thought-provoking, Hail Satan? offers a timely look at a group of often misunderstood outsiders whose unwavering commitment to social and political justice has empowered thousands of people around the world.”

Although I was underwhelmed at their latest large news stunt, (Suing Netflix over a Baphomet statue in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina? Not very “metal” of you, guys…) I am always fascinated to hear about both the Satanic Temple as well as the Church of Satan (Not only are they different, they aren’t the best of buddies, either.) Their views are not as outrageous as most people think them to be, and the feedback from Sundance about this film has been nothing but glowing with embers of hellfire.

So are you gonna catch a screening of this April 19th, on Good Friday? Or are you going to wait until a less blasphemous day? Check out the trailer below:
